Mountain biking down the “World’s Most Dangerous Road” – adrenaline assured ! This adventure is recommended from March to November, but can be done during the rainy season on request. The downhill mountain bike race is one of the most popular in Bolivia and also universally known by aficionados of mountain biking.Whether you are a beginner (with good confidence, though) or an expert, this descent can be done at your own pace but keep in mind that if you are too slow (especially during the rainy season) there is a big chance that you’ll be put back on the bus for some parts of the tour. Please do not attempt this tour if you are nervous and/or have trouble with heights. The downhill ride starts at La Cumbre, the pass that separates the Altiplano and the south tropical zone of the Yungas. We cycle from a cold, dry and rocky landscape to a lush jungle with tropical humid heat. We ride down the so called “Death Road” which used to be the only road that connected the Altiplano with the Amazon. This road received its name because of numerous accidents and you will notice why because of the many crosses that are scattered along the road. Since the new road opened a couple of years ago this road is hardly used by cars and trucks and therefore we have an almost free path for the descent. Our 64km/40mi long ride takes us from 4670m/15.320ft to 1487m/4.879ft which is a drop of 3183m/10.440ft with a few uphill passages and some flat parts. We finish our tour in Yolosa where you have time to relax before returning to La Paz. 1 day La Paz – Mountain Biking Death road to Yolosa – La Paz The ride begins at La Cumbre (4,700m/15,400 feet) where you’ll see fantastic views of a number of snow-covered peaks, including Huayna Potosí (6,088m/19,973 feet). From here you descend rapidly down a twisting asphalted road among mountain peaks, grazing llamas and alpacas, tiny villages and a drug check-post (?!). You stop for refreshments, photos, and rests along the way - all the better to give you time to take in the scenery: towering cliff faces, dramatic drops and ever greener vegetation. After a snack you descend further, and after a brief undulating section of road you enter the jungle itself and the most challenging part of the ride. This infamous narrow dirt road is cut precariously into the side of the mountain and descends 2,000m (6,500 feet). With 1,000m+ (3,300 feet) sheer drops off to your left and hulking rock overhangs and cascading waterfalls to your right, you ride through mist, low cloud and dust. As you near the end of the ride it gets progressively hotter and dustier. By the time you arrive at the bottom in Yolosa (1,100m/3,600 feet) you will be tired, hot, dirty and exhilarated. Just below the village of Yolosa you ride down to La Senda Verde Animal Refuge where you enjoy a late pasta and salad buffet lunch, take in the magnificent scenery, spend time relaxing by the pool, enjoying a cold drink and getting to know the rescued animals. The drive back up to La Paz (by car of course) takes approx. 3 – 4 hours and you should expect to arrive between 19h00 – 21h00. Snack and lunch included. Options You have the possibility to extend your trip to Coroico where you can visit the Coca and coffee plantations, go Canyoning or just relax by the pool. If you don’t have much time you can also return to La Paz and take the night bus to Uyuni – please ask us for more information.
