We pick you up at the El Alto airport, the highest
commercial airport in the world, and depending
on your time of arrival there might be time for
a tour of the city and dinner after you get installed

La Paz City Tour
– Valle de la Luna (3315m/10.876ft)
At 08h00 we meet to go on a private tour of
the city. We’ll visit a few museums as
well as the church and convent San Francisco.
After lunch we descend to the southern part
of La Paz to visit the Valle de la Luna; mistakenly
called a valley the Valle de la Luna is made
up of strange rock formations that give it its
lunar landscape. We return to the centre in
the late-afternoon and the evening is free to

3 - La
Paz - Sajama National Park (4255m/13.960ft)

We leave from the hotel around 09h00 and todays
route takes us on a nice tour across the Altiplano.
We start by driving South to the small town
Patacamaya where we turn West and the rest of
the way we are guided by the imposing stratovolcano
Sajama. On our way we visit the Chulpas which
are burial chambers from the pre-Colombian era,
now empty because of systematic pillage. A few
kilometres before we reach the Sajama National
Park we stop at the small village Curahuara
de Carangas. The towns colonial church is known
as the Sistine chapel of the Altiplano, because
of its perfectly conserved frescos, painted
solely with natural paint. After this impressive
visit we continue to the nice and small lonely
town Tomarapi. From the asphalted road that
leads all the way to the Chilean border we turn
right and follow a small bumpy trail that leads
into the Sajama National Park. Depending on
our time of arrival we might have time to take
a swim in the thermal springs or visit the geysers.

- Sajama
Today we visit
the Sajama National Park which was Bolivia’s
first protected area. The park lies at the foot
of the extinct stratovolcano Sajama, the highest
summit in Bolivia with its 6542m/21.463ft. It
was declared a national park in order to protect
the endagered Queñua forests which are
the highest forest in the word. After lunch we
pass the Laguna Huaña Khota on our way

5 - Sajama – Tahua (3707m/12.162ft)
We have a long day ahead of us. After
breakfast we head towards the small village
Tahua which lies north of the Salar de Uyuni.
First we reach the small picturesque village
Sabaya, from where we cross the Salar de Coïpasa
(also known as the mirror of the earth) and
after passing the checkpoint at the small garrison
village Llica we enter the Uyuni salt flat.
Mid-afternoon we reach Tahua from where we have
a wonderful view of the magnificent salt flat
– the biggest in the world. Depending
on our time of arrival we can visit the Coquësa
mummies or go for a walk in and around Tahua.

6 – Tahua
– Salar de Uyuni (3653m/11.985ft) - Tahua
Today we spend the day on the salt flat. The
Salar de Uyuni is the biggest salt flat in the
world with an acreage of 10582km²/4,085
square miles and it contains a reserve of 9
million tonne of Lithium and other minerals.
We head towards the “island” Incahuasi,
also known as the fisherman’s island.
This geological formation which is a leftover
of petrified limestone offers a multiple of
Tiwanakota and Inca archaeological sites. From
the highest point on the island we have an amazing
360° view of the Salar de Uyuni. We relax
and have lunch on the island and afterwards
we visit the small salt exploitation cooperation
of Colchani where salt is still extracted and
processed without machines. In the late afternoon

- Tahua - Jirira (3655m/11.991ft) - Tunupa Viewpoint
(4900m/16.076ft) - Tahua
Early in the morning we drive to Jirira from where
we go for a trek to reach the panoramic viewpoint
of the Tunupa. We have lunch next to the crater
on this long extinct volcano from where we have
an exceptional view of the Salar de Uyuni. We
drive back to Tahua and the evening is free. Hotel.

8 - Tahua
- San Pedro de Quemez (3723m/12.215ft)
After
breakfast, around 10h00, we leave for the small
village San Pedro de Quemez, situated at the
doors of the south Lipez. We cross the Salar
de Uyuni in direction southwest and we arrive
at San Pedro de Quemez by mid-afternoon. We
discover the active volcanoes Iruputuncu and
Ollaguë, the caves of Cueva Galaxia with
their astonishing rock formations sculptured
by nature over years, and also the pre-Columbian
sites showing the customs and rites of the people

9 - San
Pedro de Quemez - Ojo del Perdiz (4217m/13.835ft)
Our trip continues in southern direction.
After breakfast we head towards Ojo del Perdiz,
a small village at the heart of the grand landscapes
of the Siloli desert. We cross the Salar de
Chiguana where we visit the Arbol de Piedra
“the stone tree”, before reaching
Ojo del Perdiz by mid-afternoon. Hotel.

10 - Ojo del Perdiz - Laguna Colorada - Laguna
Verde (4400m/14.436ft)
We still continue
in southern direction now towards the lagunas.
After crossing the Siloli desert we discover
the different lakes that decorate our journey;
Seca, Cañapa, Hedionda, Honda and Khara
before we arrive at the famous Laguna Colorada
in the Avaroa National Park in the beginning
of the afternoon. The lake gets a reddish colour
from the alga and therefore the name; the coloured
lake! After lunch we continue towards the Laguna
Verde passing by the geysers of Sol de Mañana
before arriving at the small shelter Queteña,
not far from the volcano Llicancahur and the
Lagunas Blanca and Verde. The Laguna Verde gets
its name because of its turquoise colour which
it gets from a high concentration of lead carbonate,
arsenic and calcium. Please refrain from bathing!!

11 - Summit Llicancahur
(5960m/19.554ft) - Quetena Grande (4216m/13.832ft)
We get up exceptionally
early at 2h00 in the morning for an attempt
to reach the summit of the Llicancahur. Our
car drops us off at 4500m/14.764ft of altitude
from where we start our ascend. It is important
to start this early because we have to make
sure that we get back down again before the
winds rise around noon. Like with many of the
volcanoes in this area the climb of the Llicancahur
is undertaken on rather steep scree, and it’ll
take us approximately 5h00 to reach the summit.
Another 3 hours takes us back to the car and
we continue to Quetena Grande where we relax

Quetena Grande – Villamar (3951m/12.963ft)
After our stay in the south we head north
in direction of Villamar, a small village not
far from Villa Alota, which is this regions mining
village. We cross the Mallku canyon and the Valle
de las Rocas (valley of rocks) before arriving
at Villamar in the afternoon. Hotel.

13 - Villamar
- Tupiza (3165m/10.384ft)
From Villamar we head towards Tupiza via San
Vicente. This little village is famous because
it’s where Butch Cassidy and Sundance
Kid where killed. They robbed the Aramayo Company’s
salary mule train and subsequently tried to
hide in the house of a miner!! Their host obviously
gave them up to the Bolivian army and after
a shootout they were both killed. We arrive
in Tupiza in the early evening. Hotel.

- Tupiza
Today we discover Tupiza and surroundings. This
small village has an average temperature between
18°C/64.4°F and 32°C/89.6°F and
is situated in the south Chichas. This small oasis
also named the pearl of Bolivia is abound with
impressive decor. We can either visit on horseback

15 - Tupiza
We leave for a hike in the surroundings of Tupiza
in the footsteps of Butch Cassidy and Sundance
Kid. During our trek we can admire cactus and
Queñua forest and the spectacular mountains.
Before arriving at Huaca Huañusca we
cross the small villages San Miguel and Salo
and we follow the route of the famous bandits.
After lunch we return to Tupiza by the same

We visit the Quebrada de Palala, El Sillar and
Nazarenito before reaching the abandoned mine

- Tupiza
– Tarija (1870m/6.135ft)
Today we head towards Bolivia’s wine capital
Tarija. The village got its name from Francisco
de Tarija, an andalusian member of the Diego d’Almagro
expedition who was the first Spaniard to visit the
valley which was populated by an Indian ethnos named
“tomata”. From the mix of Spaniards
and tomatas a new population was born called the
chapacos. Some 4 hours brings us to Tarija, through
lunar valleys and a succession of mountain passes.

Today we visit the town; the cathedral, the
San Roque church, the San Francisco convent,
the cultural house known as the house of gold

20 - Tarija
– Potosi (4000m/13.123ft)
Today we drive to Potosi. The colonial town
is the highest town with a population of more
than 100 000 in the world. On our way we pass
the biological reserve of the Cordillera de
la Sama which plays an important role in the
water supply for Tarija. It is also a region
filled with small Queñua forests and
pine trees and it is easy to come across animals
typical of the Andes like condors, pumas, vicuñas

In the XVIth and XVIIth century Potosi was the
biggest town in the world taking into consideration
the miner population, and is still the 2nd most
beautiful town after Sucre. After breakfast we
visit the mines of the Cerro Rico (Rich Mountain)
and we meet again after lunch to visit the famous
Casa de la Moneda and the city and the evening
is free to explore Potosi by night. Hotel.

Not too late nor too early we leave Potosi
and head towards Sucre the constitutional capital
of Bolivia, also called the white city. We pass
by the small villages Betanzos and Miraflores

A day filled with music and culture is waiting
for us. We will visit some of the museums (Asur

Today nothing is planned. If today falls on
a Sunday you can visit the famous market Tarabuco,
an encounter with a real “mercado Indio”.
This is the day that the Quechua Indians from
the surrounding communities meet – a high-boiling

to admire typical clothes and traditions preserved

– Sucre

we head towards Aiquile, a nice small village
which was devastated by an earthquake in 1998.
The population is mainly Quechua and the village
is known to make the best charangos in the country.

- Samaipata (1799m/5.902ft)
From Aiquile we head towards Samaipata.
El Fuente de Samaipata is a pre-Columbian archaeological
site situated in the department of Santa Cruz.
It is famous for its huge rock tabular laid out
with channels and basins dug directly in the rocks
and the carvings of pumas and also for the seating
area and the niches that have been carved the
same way. The site was declared as a World Heritage
site in 1998 and it is believed to have been constructed
by pre-inca populations for religious and ceremonial

27 - Samaipata
- Santa Cruz (416m/1.365ft)
We head towards Santa Cruz, a city situated
in the Amazonian basin at an altitude of 416m/1.365ft.
The average annual temperature is 25°C/77°F
which corresponds to a tropical climate. Although
it is generally warm the city is also sometimes
hit by cold winds called the Surazos. We visit
the town, the Noël Kempff Mercado museum

Cruz - San Javier – Concepcion - San Ignacio
We stay in low altitude for the next
5 days. In the morning we first pass the villages
Cotoca, Pailas and Pailons and we arrive in
San Javier in time for lunch. We visit the music
school, the instrument ateliers and the baroque
style church which has been classified as a
World Heritage site. After lunch we continue
our trip via Conception where we can admire
the impressive Orchid fields and luxurious vegetation.
We arrive at San Ignacio de Velasco the biggest
Jesuit community in the area and also a bustling
commercial centre, by early evening.

Ignacio - San Miguel – San Raphael - Santa
Ana – Concepcion
In the morning we visit some of the remotest missions,
where the traditions are still very much present.
We go to San Miguel and San Raphael where we can
enjoy the art of the Chiquitanos through the different
decorations, sculptures and paintings. We continue
to the church of Santa Ana which has conserved
the spirit of the missionaries and was the last
mission in Chiquitania. After lunch we continue

30 – Concepcion
- Santa Cruz
In Conception we visit the church, a pearl from
the XVIIIth century, and in order to gain a
better understanding of the history of the missions
we have the opportunity to visit a mission museum
where we can see the different renovations that
the Chiquitania Indians have undertaken. After
this extraordinary visit we return to Santa
Cruz by way of the oldest Jesuit Mission (1691),
the San Xavier Mission. On the way we visit
the Mennonites community and we arrive in Santa

31 - Santa
Cruz - Villa Tunari
We leave Santa Cruz early in order to
be able to relax in Villa Tunari a small village
in the department of Cochabamba in which the coca
cultivation is very present. The principal river
of this region which is tributary to the Amazon
is surrounded by humid tropical forests and valleys.
We arrive around lunch and after we can either
visit one of the geologically most impressive
national parks in Bolivia, the Tunari National
Park with its canyons, cascades and luxurious
vegetation or relax by the swimming pool.

Today we visit the Macchia Park which belongs
to the Wara Yassi association. This association
is trying to help the pumas that have lived
in captivity relearn the laws of nature and

33 - Villa
Tunari - Cochabamba (2569m/8.428ft)
After lunch we leave for Cochabamba, the capital
of the department of Cochabamba which is the
only department which has no border with a bordering
country. In the north it’s bordered by
the department of Beni, in the south by Potosi
and Chuquisaca, at west by Oruro and La Paz
and at east by Santa Cruz. After we get installed
at the hotel we visit El Cristo de la Concordia,
which with its 33m/108ft is higher than both
Rio de Janeiro and Lisbon. For the more courageous
we can take the stairs that are inside this
impressive statue to the top from where we have
a wonderful view of the city. We will also visit
the 14th September square, the Cala Cala cathedral
both at the heart of the city. And of course
we’ll not forget the market "la Cancha"
and the evening is free to enjoy the city. Hotel.

From Cochabamba we head towards Torotoro to visit
the Torotoro National Park. We visit the Casa
de Piedra known as "pachamama wasi"
and the more than 2500 dinosaur footprints including
the Velociraptor. We also visit the El Vergel,
known as Waca Seng´a (Cow’s Nose)
which is a waterfall of tepid water that emerges
in the middle of the Toro Toro canyon, the tortoise
cemetery with tortoise fossils dating back 500million
years, the Batea Q´ocha rock paintings and

– Torotoro
– Tarata (2700m/8.858ft) – Sipe Sipe

After our visit of the Torotoro National Park
we continue to Tarata a small village with traditional
architecture that is also the birth town of Manuel
Mariano Melgarejo dictator and president from
1864 to 1871. We discover the main square and
the church and convent Franciscain de San José.
We will also visit the villages around Huayculli
known for their pottery and the village Villa
Rivero mainly known for its textiles. Late in
the afternoon we head towards Sipe Sipe and the

36 – Sipe
Sipe - Urmiri (3388m/11.115ft)
A couple of kilometres north of Sipe Sipe is
the Inca site Inca Raqay in the Serrania de
Tarhuani. The ruins are not very impressive
but the panorama is terrific. Every year the
winter solstice (Inti Raymi) is celebrated here
on the night of the 21st of June. We can also
visit the caves which according to legend connected
Inca Raqay with Cusco in Peru. After lunch we
leave for Urmiri, a thermal station in the department
of La Paz. We can relax next to the pool and
swim in the thermal waters rich in minerals
and iron that emerges from the ground at a temperature
of 72°C/161.6°F and reaches us at a

Paz - Tiwanaku (3845m/12.615ft) – Taraco

After breakfast we start with a visit
to Tiwanaku which is the site of a pre-Inca
civilisation that dominated half of the South-central
Andes between the Vth and the Xlth century.
After lunch we head towards the small village
Taraco on the banks of the Lake Titicaca to
discover the charm of life in rural Bolivia.

41 – Taraco
- La Paz - Coroico (1470m/4.823ft)
Early in the morning we leave for Coroico which
is situated in the northern Yungas just a couple
of hours from La Paz and the Altiplano. Both
climate and landscape changes completely and
we now find ourselves in a subtropical zone
at 1470m/4.823ft of altitude. To reach Coroico
we follow the Yungas road which used to be the
"death road" – the most dangerous
road in the world but which is now replaced
by an asphalted road. The new road is definitely
safer but just as impressive because of its
situation on the mountain side. Hotel.

Today we relax in Coroico and surroundings.
The comfortably warm climate is perfect for
growing citrus fruits, bananas, coffee and coca

43 – Coroico
- Tocaña
We leave Coroico to discover the village Tocaña
in the north Yungas. The inhabitants are descendants
of African slave workers brought to Bolivia
to work the mines of Potosi. We'll visit the
village school where gifts of notebooks and
pens are always welcome and we'll also visit
the coffee and coca plantations in an afro-andina
atmosphere. We return to Coroico where we spend

Paz – Rurrenabaque (299m/981ft) –
Santa Rosa
Again we are going to spend some time in low
altituide. Very early a car brings us to the
El Alto airport where we'll take the plane to
Rurrenabaque. From Rurrenabaque we continue
approciomately 3 hours by car until reaching
village Santa Rosa and after lunch our jeep
brings us to where we continue by boat. During
the 3 hour boat trip up the river Yucuma we
discover different bird species and reptiles.

46 - Santa Rosa
- Pampa
After breakfast we go on a 3 hour hike across
the Pampa in order to try to see and photograph
the anaconda and other regional animals. After
lunch we sail on the river Yacuma where we have
to chance to swim with the fresh water dolphins
and we return to the camp in the evening. Once
night falls we leave for a nightly boat outing,
and we make sure to take a boat without motor
in order to surprise the caïmans and other
reptiles – at night we can see their red
eyes emerging from the waters. Shelter.

47 - Santa
Rosa – Rurrenabaque
Today we get up at 05h30 in order to observe the
animals at dawn. We leave by boat and at this
time of the day we have a better chance to see
the animals because early in the morning they
hunt for food - we will also go hunting for our
breakfast at the camp around 07h30!! Around 09h00
we go for a 3 hour trek in the jungle and we return
to the camp again for lunch. After lunch the boat
brings us back to Santa Rosa where the car is
waiting to return to Rurrenabaque. Hotel.

48 – Rurrenabaque
– Park Madidi San Miguel de Bala - Rurrenabaque
Our friends from San Miguel de Bala come to
pick us up from Rurrenabaque. A 40min boat trip
on the river Beni brings us into the jungle
to the eco-shelter San Miguel de Bala. Well
arrived we start by visiting the surroundings.
At about 1km from the shelter we can swim in
a small natural swimming pool with a waterfall
of crystalline water. Once we return to the
shelter we can appreciate the culinary skills

- La Paz – Cobija (252m/827ft)
Early in the morning we return to the airport
this time to catch a plane that will bring us
to Cobija (meaning blanket!), the capital of the
department of Pando which is the youngest department
in Bolivia. This tropical town has the most rainfall
in Bolivia with 1770mm/70in of water per year.
If our visit is between the 18th and the 27th
of August we can visit the market La Feria de
Muestra at which the artisans from the neighbourhood
participate. In the afternoon we visit the town;
the cultural centre and the church Cruz Milagrosa.
The evening is free to discover this town in expansion.

– Cobija
The day is free to enjoy the town or visit the
surroundings. We also have the possibility to
visit the natural rubber and macadamia nut plantations

- Cobija - La Paz
In the morning we are taken to the airport in
order to return to La Paz and once arrived the

Paz - Chacaltaya (5200m/17.060ft)- Puerto Perez
(3815m/12.516ft)
We leave early in the morning to visit Chacaltaya
(the highest skirun in the world now closed
due to lack of snow) which is only one hour
away from La Paz. It only takes about 10min
from our stop to climb the last bit to reach
the top where we have a wonderful view of a
large part of the Cordillera Real, in particular
the Nevado Illimani, the Huayna Potosi and the
Condoriri. We can also see the Bolivian Altiplano
and the Lake Titicaca. Days with really good
visibility show the clouds over the Yungas and
in the far the volcanoes Sajama, Parinacota
and Pomerape. After lunch we head towards the
Lake Titicaca and we spend the night at a small
inn owned by our friend and musician Anselmo
in the small village Puerto Perez. Inn.

- Puerto Perez
After breakfast we visit the surroundings of Puerto
Perez and also the islands Kalahuta, Suriqui and
Pariti. On Pariti we can see some very good weaving
and Inca terracing and Suriqui is famous for the
traditional Totora reed boats that are still manufactured

- Puerto
Perez – Copacabana (3949m/12.956ft)
Today we follow the Lake Titicaca to the Tiquina
strait which we cross by boat and continue to
Copacabana. We enjoy a relaxing day visiting the
town and enjoying the atmosphere. Hotel.

56 - Copacabana
– Isla de la Luna (3900m/12.795ft) –
Isla del Sol (4000m/13.123ft)
After breakfast we walk to the port
where a boat is waiting to bring us to Isla
del Sol. On our way we visit Isla de la Luna
and then we continue to the north of the Isla
del Sol. From here we can either go for a small
trek and visit the different archaeological
sites and museum or take the boat to the south
of the island and visit the Inca stairs and
fountain. Hotel. Transport:

– Isla del Sol - Copacabana
After we’ve walked down the Inca stairs
we visit the site Pilkokaina and then we return
to Copacabana where the rest of the day is free.

– Copacabana
In the morning we visit the martyrdom which is
north of the town and it takes about half an hour
to reach top of this place of contemplation. From
here we have a magnificent view of the lake. We
walk back down to visit the basilica of Copacabana
and after lunch we visit the Horca del Inca, l’Inti
Kala and Kusijata. Hotel. B

– Copacabana - La Paz
After breakfast we leave for La Paz and the afternoon
is free to profit from the last hours in the Bolivian
